Colin Kinner, CEO

Colin Kinner

Colin has over fifteen years of experience in the formation, financing and growth of technology-based startup companies in Australia and the UK. His experience includes strategy development, business planning, raising equity capital and providing training and mentoring to entrepreneurs.

 
 

His career has included roles in consulting with PricewaterhouseCoopers, corporate finance/capital raising with Millhouse IAG, and early stage investment as Head of Funds Management at Imperial College Innovations in London, where he managed a seed fund with a portfolio of 36 early stage investments. Colin has also spent several years working with entrepreneurs in the local research sector, having held senior roles in the commercialisation companies of The University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology.

Colin has been a director of a number of technology-based start-up companies, including UK-based laser imaging company Holoscan Limited and Brisbane-based hydrogen storage company Hydrexia Pty Ltd.

Colin joined i.lab Incubator as Chief Executive Officer in May 2010.

He holds a BSc(Hons) and an MBA, and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Peter Allison, BDM

Peter Allison

Business Development Manager

Peter's initial training and experience focused on the earth sciences. From 1982 to 1988 he worked for leading Australian and US agribusiness firms on projects in the Middle East and Africa. These years of agribusiness experience quickly taught him the vital importance marketing plays in the ultimate success of any business venture.

 
 

Peter has wide business consultancy experience.

Arising from this recognition, from 1989 to 1990 he studied for an MBA at the University of Queensland, specialising in marketing and market research.

Since 1990 Peter has worked extensively in marketing consulting, working initially with Queensland's leading research firm Marketshare Pty Ltd and then Corporate Context Pty Ltd. During this time he managed his own specialist team of consultants working across a very wide range of industry sectors on projects in Australia, Asia, the Pacific and Europe. His project experience has been diverse, working for some of Australia's leading companies on topics such as beer, wine, bulk foodstuffs, residential development, tourism, hospitality, technical software, video security, industrial subdivision, building products, base metals, mining equipment, manufacturing exports and professional services. These and other projects have typically involved Peter in strategic planning, qualitative and quantitative market research, marketing planning, organisational design and development and financial analysis roles.

Peter has also been appointment as an Adjunct Lecturer to the University of Queensland Business School where he taught MBA students in his area of speciality - Principles of Marketing during the period 1999 to 2001.

In the period 2000 to 2001 Peter launched and managed a dot.com related business venture and gained all the firsthand experience of creating and driving a start-up small business.

In the period 2001 to 2003 Peter worked as an independent marketing consultant in the areas of mining technology commercialisation, liquor retailing and automotive after-market product wholesaling.

In 2003-2004 Peter worked on contract for the Queensland Department of State Development and Innovation in the area of biotechnology industry research, commercialisation skills education and government grant program management.

Peter is currently the Business Development Manager with i.lab Incubator Pty Ltd where he provides hands-on mentoring and assistance to start-up technology companies in the areas of market research, business planning, financial modelling, capital raising and business strategy. Peter also assists regional Queensland stakeholder groups with the establishment of a network of technology incubators as part of the Queensland Government's State Wide Technology Incubator strategy.

Peter holds a B Nat Res from UNE and an MBA from UQ.

Ruth Drinkwater

Ruth Drinkwater

Business Development Manager

Ruth was formerly the CEO of teQstart Pty Ltd, managing investment funds and an investment portfolio of 26 companies across the biotechnology, and non-life science technology sectors. The Queensland Government sold teQstart Pty Ltd to Uptake Health Capital Partners in early March, 2009.

 
 

Ruth has worked with over 60 technology-based start-up companies in recent years and has experience at the seed stage of investment. This includes working with stakeholders across the innovation sector to structure and resource companies for sustainable growth.

During a commercialisation career spanning almost 20 years, Ruth has developed capabilities across innovation investment, general management and strategic development of technology and knowledge based SMEs. Ruth has extensive experience encompassing business planning, resource management, market research and marketing, intellectual property, product development and capital raising. Together with managing cultural change in high technology and entrepreneurial sectors dominated by energetic personalities, these skills complement Ruth’s leadership and project management capabilities.

Ruth is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, is a Director on the Board of QUT Creative Enterprise Australia, a Director on the Board of Women in Technology and Chair, WiT|Biotech.has wide business consultancy experience.

Helen Vince

Operations Manager and Company Secretary
i.lab Incubator Pty Ltd

Helen Vince joined the i.lab technology incubator at Toowong in February 2004 and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of i.lab. Helen has extensive organisational management experience both in Australia and overseas.

 
 

She has owned her own business and has worked in both the public and private sectors. In the last five years she has worked closely with companies in the emerging technologies field.

Prior to returning to Queensland in 2000, Helen spent 18 years with the Australian diplomatic service. As well as time in Canberra she served in five overseas postings - Papua New Guinea, Denmark, Pakistan, Japan and finally as Vice-Consul in New Caledonia.
